how to manually upgrade Prognosis on Windows

Is there a way to manually upgrade Prognosis? We have a corporate environment with tight security requirements and manual steps should help give us more visibility through an upgrade, to refine our anti-virus and file system permissions as required - backup, uninstall, pre-create folders and set permissions, install new version, restore, patch?

Re: how to manually upgrade Prognosis on Windows

Yes you can! There is a manual upgrade procedure in Online Help documentation here:

Deployment and Installation > Installation > Server on MS Windows > Upgrade Installation > Manual Up...

And if need to pre-create folders to set file system permissions and anti-virus exclusions before the install then an unattended command line install command can do this:

Deployment and Installation > Installation > Server on MS Windows > Unattended Installation

Here is a short video example of how to do this kind of manual upgrade (from 11.3 to 11.5 in this example):

Steps in this video:

Preparation:
a- Latest patch is installed;
b- Generate a new irfax, copy it to C:\MyBackup
c- copy license file Prognosis\Server\Confguration\license to C:\MyBackup\
d- From Community download to C:\Installer\
>- installer of new version to C:\Installer
>- patch of new version to C:\Installer
** license version matches or higher than the version we want to upgrade to? Otherwise need to request a new license from IR account manager in order to proceed.
For more see Upgrade Checklist in teh online Help documentation of the new version to be upgraded to:
Deployment and Installation > Installation > Server on MS Windows > Upgrade Installation > Upgrade Checklist

Then, upgrade using the Steps in this Help article:
"Deployment and Installation > Installation > Server on MS Windows > Upgrade Installation > Manual Upgrade Procedure"

Step 1: extract installer

Step 2: Cancel Setup.

Step 3:
- rename Prognosis\backup_restore
- copy installer-extracted backup_restore to Prognosis\

Step 4: run PrognosisBackup.bat
- from Command Prompt with
- Run as Administrator
- large screen buffer height (to save command line logging)
- Save command line logging to file (in case needed for trouble shooting);

Step 5:
- Copy PrognosisBackup-yyyy-mm-ddThh.mm.ss
to C:\MyBackup\

- Find what components were installed

find "PROPERTY CHANGE: Deleting FEATURE_" install.log

Step 6:
Uninstall Prognosis
[Delete any remaining folders]
Precreate folders, and set permissions - in this example video give 'Full Control' to 'Users'
C:\Prognosis
C:\PrognosisBackup
C:\PrognosisData
C:\PrognosisFiles
C:\Users\<CurrentLoginAccount>\

Install new Prognosis version using commands:

cd "C:\Installer\Prognosis11.5.0\"

msiexec /passive /i "C:\Installer\Prognosis11.5.0\Prognosis11.5.0.msi" /l*v "install5.log" ACCEPTENDUSERLICENSEAGREEMENT=1 ADDLOCAL="ALL" LICENSE="C:\MyBackup\license" HOMEDIRECTORY="C:\Prognosis"

* Verify Web UI Login,

Step 7:
C:\Prognosis\Backup_restore>PrognosisRestore.bat "C:\MyBackup\PrognosisBackup-machinename-2013-09-27T09.46.44"

Save the command output.

Step 8: Check that config:
Services are running;
Monitored appliances / nodes are showing as before
Web UI login is successful and now showing all monitored appliances / managed nodes.

Step 9: Install latest patch for new version eg 11.5 patch 1 (as of December 2018)
