Monitoring Payload bandwidth per device in the WAN

We want to be able to calculate the payload of the bandwidth in the managed link WAN between our Prognosis Monitoring Node located at our data center and the customer devices.

The only thing I found about the bandwidth is in the Documentation is under the Deployment Considerations “In an environment containing one or more device groups, bandwidth usage on the WAN link between the Network Operations Center and a remote group may be a concern. To minimize bandwidth usage on the WAN it is recommended to position a Monitoring Server close to (i.e. in the same LAN as) the device group being monitored”

Is the information exist for the payload bandwidth per devices type or is it possible to calculate.

Thanks

Re: Monitoring Payload bandwidth per device in the WAN

Hi Scott thanks for your answer.

I looking more to knowing how much WAN bandwidth we need to reserve for monitoring the devices.

I’m looking to something like in the documentation under Deployment, Hardware Requirements for Server Installation, Storage Requirements but for the bandwidth require per devices.

What is the payload 10 kb, 50kb, 100kb, 200kb, 1mb ... of bandwidth should be require to monitoring the devices.

Thanks,

Re: Monitoring Payload bandwidth per device in the WAN

Hi @Alain,

The network data information is available from Network Manager if the server is using Windows 2012 or earlier.
See this Online Help page (and sub-pages): https://help.prognosis.com/server/121/infrastructure/network-manager

If Prognosis is on a Windows version post 2012 then it looks like an Extended Solution might be needed to collect the data on newer Windows servers. If you are interested in pursuing this option, please contact you Account Manager.

Thank you,
Scott Baldwin

Re: Monitoring Payload bandwidth per device in the WAN

Hi @Alain,

Calculating the bandwidth needed is very dependant on what is monitored. There have been some attempts to project bandwidth usage based on factors like the number of servers, endpoints and call volume, but the estimates were 10-20 times higher than the bandwidth usage actually seen.

Generally, a 1Gb ethernet connection is more than enough for a Prognosis server.

I would prefer to have a more specific answer, but the flexibility of Prognosis Server makes knowing the bandwidth usage very difficult to estimate. Checking the bandwidth usage of a working installation would be a much better indicator of expected traffic rather than trying to use estimations.

Thank you,
Scott Baldwin

Thank you Scott, you confirm what I believed. Too many variable to establish a standard.

Thanks,
